In Production

Living Earth Television's first broadcast series, to be shown on PBS stations and other channels in the US, features award-winning documentary programs from television stations and producers all over China.

China Inside Out offers a cross-section of contemporary Chinese society, as seen by Chinese television producers. In cooperation with filmmakers and television stations all over the country, as well as China's major broadcasting university, Living Earth Television presents this stunning series.

The four-minute trailer, currently available on our home page, gives a short sampling of some of the programs to be translated and broadcast by Living Earth Television.

Some programs to be included in China Inside Out and additional broadcasts:

Construction Site: China's construction boom brings hundreds of thousands of young workers from the villages to help build housing and commercial buildings. In this visually stunning program, the viewer is immersed in the sights and sounds of the construction site, and hears some workers answer a few simple but revealing questions.

Winter Pastures: Moving between widely separated winter pastures for their herds, an Inner Mongolian family bundles their elaborate tent – and the baby – onto camels for the trek to the next pasture.

Kindergarten: Enter the world of tiny children as they experience their first week of boarding school – where their parents drop them off on Monday and return to pick them up for the weekend. The children's story unfolds without narration, through exquisite cinematography that brings the camera to their eye level.

The Art of Life: In three short profiles of ordinary Chinese people, viewers get an introductory cross-section of creativity in contemporary China. A noodle chef in a restaurant devises and teaches the other staff an elegant and entertaining style of preparing noodles for customers; a photographer poses engaged couples for unique wedding photos; and women in traditional dress prepare silk cocoons in an upscale shop amid visitors browsing finished silk items.

The Next Generation: A sampling of work from China's future documentarians, produced for classes at two of China's major broadcasting universities.

Houseboat Dreams: A young girl lives with her family on a houseboat, and attends school with other kids of the houseboat community. Her dream is of living in a real house and continuing her education so she can pursue a career in the city.

Colors of China: A family of artists celebrates the visual richness of life in China in their exquisite individual styles.

Schoolgirls: A Buddhist temple in southern China has received forty-five abandoned baby girls. Most have been adopted, but the remaining seven are growing up with the guidance of the nuns and their teacher, and preparing to go to school in the nearby village.
